Northwestern University Libraries
Director of Preservation
Hoffman Estates, IL
Tonia Grafakos, a Professional Associate member of the AIC, is the Chief Conservator at Northwestern University Library, where she has worked since 2008. She earned a Master of Science in Information Studies with an Advanced Certificate in Conservation from the University of Texas at Austin (2008) after having completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Tonia was the Harper Inglis Conservation Fellow at the Library of Congress and participated in the Gulf Coast Recovery project after hurricane Katrina, with additional experience at Harvard University, the Harry Ransom Center, and the Pinos y Sarriera Archives. Prior to discovering conservation, she worked in the publishing industry where she developed her organizational and time-management skills. The many mentors who aided Tonia in transitioning to the conservation field have inspired her interest in working with pre-program students and emerging professionals. Tonia has contributed to BPG through her service as the ACDG co-chair. Her hope is to make a positive contribution to the organization as the voice for the members of the Book and Paper Group. By fostering opportunities for communication, conservators can help each other develop and promote the field of conservation.
